Transeuropéennes’in ilk serisi 1993 yılında, ilk sayısının kapağında Jean-Luc Nancy’nin Saraybosna’ya ithafen yazdığı “Çatışmaya Övgü” (Eloge de la mêlée) başlıklı yazısıyla çıkmaya başlamıştı. Bu serinin internete aktarımı yakında başlayacak.
Why does the question of incompatibility and cultural difference engender war and not peace? The act of “translating between cultures” is a vital issue: it can be defined in terms of negotiating differences rather than the opposition between the universal and the local, and provides an alternative to such outdated notions as “the dialogue of cultures” or “multiculturality.” Translating between cultures is a thematic field in keeping with Transeuropéennes’ longstanding preoccupations, and was especially chosen to inaugurate the new bilingual French/English layout.
Will the twentieth century be seen as the age of partition? The time has come to take stock and to assess the lessons to be drawn from partition's achievements and failures : Belfast, Berlin, Mostar, Cyprus, the paradigmatic split between India and Pakistan, and the more recent break-up of Yugoslavia. Is partition itself a source of conflict? Or the prelude to genuine peace processes? This issue puts these questions into perspective, through accounts from witnesses and debate.
Between self-negation and the negation of the other, the role played by language and the politics of language in the construction or in the destruction of a public sphere is crucial. It must be borne in mind that when one touches language, one touches the profound-most forces which make living together possible.
