Born in Avallon (France) in 1942. Emeritus Professor (political and moral philosophy), University of Paris X-Nanterre, and Distinguished Professor of Humanities, University of California, Irvine.

What makes a reflection on the future of “philosophy” as we knew it and practiced it (whether it will exist under the same name, separated from other scientific or social practices, etc.) at the same time urgent and confused, is among other reasons the fact that it is frequently reaching us through considerations on the geohistorical status of the association between the discourse and the institution.

This article is the text of a lecture given by Etienne Balibar as the introduction to a debate that took place at Panteion University in Athens on the evening of 14th June 2010. Participants in the round table discussion included Etienne Balibar, Costas Douzinas, Pavlos Klavdianos (from the journal Epochi), Yannis Millios (from the review Thesseis), Vanghelis Bitsoris (Aletheia), and Vicky Skoumbi (Aletheia ).
